  • Accelerated Action®
  • Acoustic dowel construction -- The dowels that the cast-iron plate rests on so that the plate is not actually resting on the soundboard. The dowels are cut to regulate the downbearing of the strings on the bridge.
  • Achieving a Constant, Stable Environment for your Piano
  • Action of a piano -- The moving mechanical parts of the piano used to throw the hammer against the string in order to activate the string.
  • Action centers -- The small hinges that act as pivot points for the moving parts of the top portion of the action.
  • Agraffes -- Pieces of brass with small holes to allow the strings to pass through acting as the front termination point of the speaking part of the string. Agraffes also help keep the strings evenly spaced.
  • Aliquot -- A bar at the back of the string between the bridge and the hitch pin that acts as a rear-bearing point of the string in order to control the tone of the piano. They are also helpful in refining the downbearing of the string on the bridge.
  • All-Steinway Schools
  • Art-case -- A highly decorated piano cabinet.
  • Attack -- The very instant that the hammer hits the string to activate it. The attack is the sound that is made the instant the hammer hits the string. Beyond the attack is the decay.
