  • Fallboard -- The wooden cover for the keyboard that folds down and covers the keys when the piano is not being used.  The fallboard is sometimes referred to as the 'nameboard' because it is the piece that displays the brand name of the piano.
  • False beats -- Usually caused by a flaw in the string or an imprecise termination point of the speaking part of the string, a false beat is a sound coming from a single string that resembles the beats made by two unison strings that are not in tune.

  • Flange -- A flange is a hinge that projects from an action rail used to attach a moving action part, such as a hammer, damper underlever or wippen, to the rail.
  • Flange bushing -- The cloth that lines the hole of an action center in order to keep the flange from making noise.
  • Flange screws -- The screw that attaches and secures the flange to its rail.

  • Fraizing -- The process through which the rim of a grand piano is sized.
  • Fortepiano -- An early prototype in the evolution of the modern piano.
  • Fundamental -- The root sound of the overtone series produced by the entire length of the speaking part of the string.
  • Fundamental vibration -- The main or loudest sound you hear in a note when a string is played. It is the note that guides the tuning.
