  • Water damage -- A major threat to a piano's overall structural integrity. Water damage can have many causes, such as a leaking roof, an overhead fire sprinkler, leaking potted plants placed on the piano top, flooding, spilled drinks, etc. A common case for repair and refinishing.
  • Wippen -- The collection of parts that lift the hammer, propels the hammer toward the string and resets the hammer in order to play again. As one of the most technically advanced parts of the action, the wippen has several functions, including transferring the upward motion of the back of the key to the hammer through the jack, controlling the letoff, utilizing the repetition lever and repetition spring to push the hammer back into its reset position. See Escapement mechanism.
  • Wood
  • Wound strings -- Strings in the lower register that are covered by a copper wrap, wound tightly around the core of the wire. The wrap adds weight to the string, lowering its pitch without diminishing its flexibility.
  • Wrestplank -- another name for the pinblock.
